Among the other members of Anderson’s mind-boggling cast are Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Owen Wilson, and Jena Malone. Anderson's Inherent Vice (2014) based on Thomas Pynchon's 2009 novel, The Plot Against America (HBO, 2020) based on Philip Roth's 2004 novel. Joaquin Phoenix goes all the way for Anderson (just as he did in The Master) playing Doc Sportello, the private investigator searching for his ex-girlfriend Shasta (Katherine Waterston, a revelation), menaced at every turn by Josh Brolin as the telegenic police detective “Bigfoot” Bjornsen. It’s not just the look (which is ineffably right, from the mutton chops and the peasant dresses to the battered screen doors and the neon glow), it’s the feel, the rhythm of hanging out, of talking yourself into a state of shivering ecstasy or fear or something in between. Paul Thomas Anderson’s wild and entrancing new movie, the very first adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel, is a cinematic time machine, placing the viewer deep within the world of the paranoid, hazy L.A. Whats more, marred by technical issues inherent in EAs mandated. Best known for her role as the manipulative Alison DiLaurentis on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars, Pieterse can be glimpsed quickly in a scene in which she dances with Martin Short. Encore screening added October 12 at 9:30pm! especially given its place under the vice grip of publisher Electronic Arts. The ’70s-set story begins as Sportello is approached by his ex-girlfriend ( Katherine Waterston ), whom he still carries a flame for, with a story of her kidnapped billionaire boyfriend and his.

It self-seeds easily so can spread and become weedy in the landscape. Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Aphids, scale, maple worms, leafrollers, and leafhoppers are occasional pests. Anthracnose, leaf scorch, and frost damage, especially from late frosts, can occur. Plant it in small spaces, a container, or in Asian gardens. The leaves are green in summer and then change to yellows and red or orange in fall. It is an unusually small maple, as it will reach only 2 to 3 feet in height, but grows twice as wide. It prefers humus-rich, well-drained soil moderate water and full to partial sun. In the early spring, its leaves have a distinctive red-purple border. Acer is Latin for sharp and palmatum means shaped like a hand, referring to the leaves. It is known for its interesting leaf coloring. Japanese maples are native to southeast Korea and central and south Japan. 'Kiyohime' Japanese maple is a dwarf, spreading maple cultivar in the Sapindaceae (soapberry) family. Phonetic Spelling AY-ser pahl-MAY-tum Description If they’re too far away, you’ll only tap them back lightly, and lose stamina to boot. The trick here is that your enemy has to be a set distance away from the edge. There are many, many large heights in Dark Messiah. Kicking, on the other hand, is massively useful, allowing you to kill powerful enemies in a single blow.īasically speaking, if you kick an enemy from a height, they’re going to instantly die. Well, there is a mechanism that fits that description, but you won’t get to it until chapter seven. It’s easy to dismiss the kick mechanism here as a gimmick, something to use once or twice and then never touch again. Here are a few tips to putting the physics in Dark Messiah to work for you. Luckily, Dark Messiah incorporates much of the physics whackiness from Half-Life 2, but it does it in some new ways. One of the things that game in particular was known for was its innovative use of physics, with such craziness as the Gravity Gun letting everyone fling around sawblades with abandon. The most powerful weapons in the game deal double damage to the undead, though, so you likely won’t have to worry about it.ĭark Messiah is based on the Source engine, which hasn’t powered a large number of games thus far, but which is well known for one in particular: Half-Life 2. It’s unclear if undead have any particular weaknesses they appear not to. Knowing what kind of magical attacks your foes are weak against will help you take advantage of their vulnerabilities. Set them alight! Weak to Lightning: Orcs, Goblins, and Cyclopses. If you don’t pay attention to the loading screens, you may not know this, but, for the sake of being thorough, we’ll spell it out for you. Various weapons are listed as doing more damage to enemies that are vulnerable to fire or lightning. GameSpot’s Game Guide to Dark Messiah has all the information you need to complete the single-player journey, including details on skills, secret areas, and boss fights. That said, though, the action is simply fun, what with all the kicking people off of cliffs, into fires, into water, into spikes, into spikes that are on fire, etc. You’ll get more head-bobbing action here than in any dozen other comparable games. Along the path of delivering the crystal, watching it get stolen, tracking it down, delivering it elsewhere, tracking down another mystical artifact, etc., you’ll learn more about your dark destiny, make some new friends, and kill a whole lot of orcs and goblins.Īlthough a few games have attempted to incorporate melee combat from a first-person perspective, few have done so as viscerally as Dark Messiah does, mostly through its complete control of your camera perspective. Despite his unfortunate name, Phenrig seems to see potential in you, and sets you out onto the path of adventure by sending you after an important relic: the Shantiri Crystal. It’s taken a while for the physics revolution to capitalize on the seeds sowed by HL2, but not, with the arrival of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, it appears that some developers are seeing how to use physics as an integral part of their games, instead of simply more eye candy.ĭark Messiah puts you in the role of Sareth, an orphaned adventurer-in-training, under the tutelage of your master Phenrig. The Source engine has been the home to relatively few games over the past couple of years, with Half-Life 2 and assorted mods being the biggest splash. Here are three ways, why they work, and quick tips to use them to put a smile on your face.By: Matthew Rorie Design: Randall Montanari Ut enim ad minima veniam, quis nostrum exercitationem ullam corporis suscipit laboriosam, nisi ut aliquid ex ea commodi consequatur? You can do it anywhere and it does not cost anything. Scientific research shows this is a great way to immediately increase happiness. The new consoles run laps around their predecessors, but a lot of that improved performance comes from the Xbox Series X leaping from slow 5,400rpm hard drives to an SSD, and from ancient, slow-even-at-the-time AMD Jaguar CPU cores to modern, kick-ass AMD Ryzen processors. Expandability and upgrades remain a core PC tenet. If you already have a decent, relatively modern PC, you don’t need to try to mirror the loadout of an Xbox Series X from scratch. Welcome (finally) to the SSD life, console gamers. If you need hardware for work and play, that needs to be accounted for. But you can do a lot more than game on a computer-you can do your taxes, email friends, shop online, edit videos, make music, juggle spreadsheets, and an infinite assortment of other tasks. If you’re buying a new system dedicated wholly to gaming, then sure, Microsoft’s console is cheaper than a gaming PC. The Xbox Series X’s hardware value also dissipates a bit if you view it through a wider lens, given the PC’s advantages. That crap doesn’t fly on a platform where competition reigns supreme. You don’t have to pay a monthly fee to play online multiplayer games on the PC either-even with Microsoft’s cross-platform Xbox Live games. And while Microsoft deserves major props for dedicating so much effort to Xbox’s backwards compatibility push, you can still play decades-old DOS games on your PC if you want. With so much competition, you’ll find great games on awesome discounts, or even given away by the various storefronts-most notably Epic’s weekly freebie. But on the PC, you can hop among Xbox Game Pass, Steam, the Epic Games Store, Origin, GOG, Ubisoft Connect,, various bespoke games like Valorant or League of Legends, and more. Buying an Xbox locks you into Microsoft’s closed ecosystem. More importantly, all of the things that make PC gaming a better value than consoles still apply (aside from the price of the new hardware). How many accounts I have across all of those apps. You can also choose different labels, in this case you only need to remember to adjust them in the AppsScript at the end. Then enter the name for your label 'NotionToSync' and click create. I used these often enough where I aliased them mzsh (M1/arm64) and ishz (Rosetta/i386). These command essentially replace my current Zsh session with one running in the architecture of my chooseing. So I found a way switch my current terminal session using arch -arm64 zsh and arch -x86_64 zsh. And I don’t expect myself to always be in Rosetta mode. I don’t like this approach (for me) because I don’t want to have multiple Terminal open that look the exact same. A lot of the suggestions I’ve gotten were to copy Terminal.app and rename it to Rosetta-Terminal.app, click the “Get Info”, and check the Run in Rosetta box. It’s important to have a terminal that can run in Rosetta (i386) so that you can build/compile/install things that aren’t able to run on M1 yet. Switching between M1 (arm64) and Rosetta (i386) I was using the robbyrussel theme so I based the joshdholtz theme off of that □Ĭreate ~/.oh-my-zsh/themes/joshdholtz.zsh-theme □Įxport ZSH = "/Users/joshholtz/.oh-my-zsh" # joshdholtz theme shows arch type in the prompt ZSH_THEME = "joshdholtz" plugins =(git ) source $ZSH/oh-my-zsh.sh I thought it would be cool to also prefix that with the architecture! My prompt already shows the directory I’m in and the git branch of the directory (if I’m in a git repo). The prompt is the thing the shows before your cursor when you are in a terminal. So the first thing I did was add the architecture my terminal was running in into my Zsh prompt. I would have solved my issues a lot sooner if I knew what architecture my terminal was running in. It turns out… the root cause of my problem was I was using a build of Alacritty (a terminal ) that was built for Intel so all of my stuff was running in Rosetta without me knowing □♂️ Would anybody like a blog post or video tutorial on how to do this? □- Josh “so many typos” Holtz □□ October 19, 2021 OMG, I finally figured out how to get my M1, homebrew, and Rubies playing nicely □ Me, M1, and homebrew are just not getting along… again □- Josh “so many typos” Holtz □□ October 19, 2021Īfter a day or two of constantly uninstalling and reinstalling homebrew and my other tools, I figured out my issue and my development environment that I wanted to use going forward. There is a YouTube format of this blog post on my YouTube channel over at □ The Problem I was my weird setup and misunderstanding of how M1 and Rosetta worked □♂️ The YouTube Format TL DR - The problem was not homebrew or any other tools. Take, one of my favorite areas in the game: The ship owned by the titular Captain Scarlett (and her titular booty). This allows the developers at Gearbox to kill multiple tropes at once and tell story that’s part Jack Sparrow and part Jabba the Hutt. The campaign and sidequests are pirate-related, asking you to explore shipwrecks and kill bandits that swap their traditional white masks and machine guns for Jolly Rogers and cutlasses, but it all takes place in an area with barely a drop of actual water. This is actually one of the most clever conceits of the whole DLC adventure. It turns out that everyone else was either killed by pirates or lack of water when the vast ocean that used to cover the area dried up. Well, at least that’s what the only living resident, a man named Shade, wants you to think. Pirate’s Booty officially begins when you visit Oasis, a picturesque beachfront resort town where absolutely no one has died of dehydration (I swear). Of course it is, as if you weren’t tipped off by “new loot.” It all sounds thrilling, but is it enough to justify going back to Pandora? Sending you and your fellow Vault Hunters to Pandora’s sprawling deserts, the Captain Scarlett and her Pirate’s Booty DLC tasks you with uncovering the lost treasure of the fearsome Captain Blade (who may or may not actually be fearsome at all) by killing sandworms, riding Return of the Jedi-esque sand skiffs, and assembling a magic compass. |
